Special Needs Registry

Do you, a relative, or a neighbor have a physical, mental, or cognitive condition that would require special assistance during an emergency?  This can include situations where someone is on oxygen, has limited mobility, or suffers from mood disorders or extreme obesity.   If so, you might want to register for the Special Needs Registry.  When a storm or other power outage occurs, the Waynesville Police Department checks on the welfare of the citizens registered. The Police will then contact the listed contact person(s) if necessary.  If emergency shelters are established, police and fire personnel will assist in transporting individuals to the shelter if needed.

For more information, and to register, please contact the Waynesville Police Department at 456-5363 or a form is available here.  Once the form is complete, please return it to the Waynesville Police Department, 9 South Main Street in Waynesville.

Call to Artists

On January 4, 2010 the Waynesville Public Art Commission will issue a call to all professional artists, residing in both North Carolina and Tennessee, to create an artistic railing at a Main Street public park to honor the historic connection between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Town of Waynesville.  The project calls for an artistic railing to be created and installed at the "Mini-Park" on the corner of Main and Depot Streets; across from the courthouse.  The railing is a component of a larger refurbishment of the entire park.

The Commission is looking for a sense of diverse elements coming together to reinforce the connection between the Town's Main Street and the Great Smoky Mountains National park.  The project site is near the location of an arched sign erected over Main Street in the 1930s, which declared this intersection to be the direction of travel to the "Eastern Entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park."  Traveling through the intersection at Depot and Main Streets, President Franklin D. Roosevelt passed through Waynesville in 1936, en route from Cherokee to Asheville, on a tour promoting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Application Deadline:  February 12, 2010
